Recent reviews:

I have spent many hours searching the web, looking for a particular kind of dimmer that could integrate well into my present home theater. I found what I was searching for in these Leviton VR dimmers. But 1st, let me supply some background.. Many years ago I installed a set of dimmers in my home theater that were depending on X10 technology. That technology obliged a separate RF remote controller and a plug in receiver to send the signal to the dimmers. It did the job, however it could not let me to create scenes (mixes of predetermined lighting cues) for watching movies, reading, full illumination, etc. You had to change each light individually to get the lighting mood you wanted, however it was the only choice I had at the time. Some years after that I replaced my older multi-function infrared (IR) established remote with a Logitech Harmony 890 remote with an RF choice that’s intended out of the box to work with Z-Wave technology dimmers. So in wanting to upgrade my dimmers my main prerequisite was that they required to be controllable using my 890 remote. I also wanted to be able to create different mixes of lighting intensities between my three sets of recessed lights that were proper for whatever it was I was doing at the time, preferably as a part of an ‘Activity’ macro sequence on the remote. Though these dimmers are a bit more costly than I’d hoped, they fit the bill perfectly. Installation was a breeze, as long as you’re comfy working around electrical switches. Mine installation was simple since I only had one set of switches to replace (single pole circuit), though these dimmers are intended to work on three way circuits also.

After reviewing some number of remote dimmer merchandise I selected the Leviton Vizia for some number of reasons although it was the most costly. 1st, most other brands seemed to have a high failure rate depending on the reviews that I read on Amazon and other websites, and second many users complained about incompatibilities with other “Z-wave” merchandise (like 3rd party remote controls), the least costly competing remote dimmers were still over $40, if I had to replace it once outside of warranty it could cost more than the Leviton. The Amazon web site does not have lots of details so here are some key product features: – Six light settings may be controlled directly from the switch or remotely – Pressing toggle switch returns the lights to the last light setting – Holding down toggle switch turns the lights all the way up – When turning on or off the lights fade on and off over a configurable time period – capability to configure maximum light setting to save energyFinally, everyone I am sure has seen the Apple iPhone commercial where they check the position of their lights and turn them off over the Internet. Because the Vizia switches are two-way (they accept commands, however also transmit on/off/light state) they should be well-matched with such a system and that is why I think about this my “gateway” product into home automation. PS. I also bought the Vizia Fan Control Switch and it works great also — but sadly is costly .

I first had the GE switches because they’re less costly so let me outline the differences. The Leviton has 2 small green LED’s instead of a bright blue one. The bottom LED indicates if the light is on or off. The top LED indicates the current dim setting if the light is off. The GE LED may be programmed to invert or not turn on with z-wave variables. The Leviton can’t, however isn’t as bright or obtrusive. I was annoyed sleeping with the GE LED, however the leviton doesn’t because an issue. The leviton operates by a single satisfying click to turn on/off. The GE is more & 34;mushy& 34; and not as straightforward to control. The Leviton has separate small dimmer control buttons, the GE doesn’t. My wife was disappointed with the GE. When I showed her a Leviton she was pleased and asked me to replace them all. Both have fade rate control capability. The fade rate on the Leviton is controlled at the switch. For the GE you have to set z-wave variables. The GE isn’t 3 way unless you get the kit. All of the Levitons have a 3way capability. Both of these require a resistive load. Leviton does make another model that will work with cfl / led. It’s costly and requires a common wire. Both work well with micasa controllers. I first had GE, however am in the procedure of replacing them with the. I feel that the slight extra cost is useful.
