I have tried lots of different things to extend Fios wifi coverage in my home. Repeaters needed recurrent resets. Bigger antennae help, however did not get the job done for me. This product is stupid simple on Fios: screw in the coax, plug in the power, wait some seconds while it shakes hands with your home network, and you are done. It’ll appear as a separate wifi signal, however uses the same network and network password. One possible headache I could foresee is if your device stubbornly hangs onto the weaker wifi signal, so that you have to manually change wifi signals when you walk into a dead zone. I was able to avoid this by picking a coax outlet that’s more centrally located than my present router place, so that it serves all regions of my home. Big BONUS: considerably better wifi speeds. I have Fios service with a 75 mbs down/ 35 mbs up plan. On a hardwire connection, I steadily get faster speeds. But, using the router offered by Verizon (Actiontec MI424WR), I do not get anything close to the speeds that I pay for over wifi. After setting up this router, I tested my hardwire connection speed (Ookla speedtest – web variant) and each of the wifi signals using an iPad Air with the Ookla speedtest app. Here are the results:Hardwire connection to router: 84/39Wifi over current Fios Router: 44/36Actiontec network extender (this product): 76/38 One buying tip: If you are on Fios, you do not need the extra mocha bridge–just the extender. You may be able to buy the extender alone (model WCB3000N) on the Verizon web page for $75 plus shipping and tax (my total was $85).

The Actiontec Dual-Band Network Extender and Ethernet Over Coax (MoCA) “kit” consists mainly of two merchandise. The ECB2500C is an Ethernet over Coax adapter. The WCB300N is the wi-fi extender. It also acts as a kind of “modem” to change the input of your original network cabling back into two, local gigabit Ethernet ports. The kit also comes with fast-start information, two coaxial RF splitters, AC adapters and all of the coax jumpers you may want to have to set the device(s) up. 1st off, this is an very complex device. The average buyer could probably be seriously perplexed by understanding the basics of how the device works, let alone how best to set it up for optimum coverage. That is probably why the vast most of these units aren’t sold straight to buyers, however are private-labeled for businesses like Verizon, Qwest, Comcast, etc. For installation by professional installers as a value-added service. This is evidenced quite obviously by the ridiculous lack of documentation that comes with the kit and the inability to download nearly any other info of practical use on the company’s support web site. The documentation (a one-sheet hookup chart) shows you how to physically set up the network, however totally no info on configuring the device or how it works is given. This is particularly annoying to those of us who are worried about issues like network security, quality of service monitoring or customizing the system to best work in a specific situation. There’s a special Android/Apple app that may be downloaded, however besides being very buggy (in specific, the “settings” button doesn’t work) it really is not that useful. It either shows you that the device works or it does not work at all. Not useful.

The 1st thing I noticed was the quality look and construction. Nice. Everything was included for my needs (except the house wiring ). It took me about 15 minutes before it was up and running. When my Windows 8 laptop recognized the device and asked for the password, I pressed the WPS button on the WCB300N and was connected now. No entering of passwords obliged. WiFi speed wasn’t showing to be quite as fast as when connecting to my TL-WDR3600 wireless router but hardly obvious. I found the range to be about the same. My installation didn’t require use of the included splitters so no comment there. Nice of them to include them although also as the two Ethernet cables. The fast start information leave a little to be wanted. If you want to make changes to the configuration (password, SSID, encryption) the default IP address for the ECB2500 is 192. 168. 99. 254, password admin. You’ll have to slide the switch to “config” but that’s all clarified in a more in depth manual available online at Actiontec’s web site. My only gripe, and it’s a small one. I like panel lights that change color showing Ethernet network connection speed (i. E. Yellow for 10/100, green for 1000). Not all switches have that feature and I find it useful. NOT a deal breaker. BONUS:The WCB300N will work independently as a WiFi extender using one of the Ethernet cable ports instead of the COAX. Kind of an costly way to go if you already have CAT 5e/6 available but it is good to know it works just good. I’m happy with the WCB3000NK01 kit and find it’s a good choice for those with COAX already installed. I could recommend for that function.
